The School of Telecoms was delighted to participate in the 5th Energia-Tec 2024 Conference, a premier gathering for professionals in the fields of Electrical Materials, Lighting, Security Systems, and Electromobility, held from October 11 to 13, 2024, at the MEC Exhibition Center in Paiania. With top exhibitors showcasing cutting-edge energy technology over three days, record-breaking attendance, and a rich event program, professionals, technicians, experts, educators, and individuals had the opportunity to gain insights, network, acquire new knowledge, and be inspired by the latest technological developments and innovations.

Responding to the invitation from Mr. Alexios Pavlopoulos, President of the Panhellenic Federation of Electrical Contractors’ Associations (POSEH), the School of Telecoms, in collaboration with the Greek Optical Fiber Association, presented a lecture titled “Presentation of Optical Fiber Indoor Installations based on the E.D.H.E. (Internal Networks for Electronic Communications) Regulations.” The lecture was highly praised by attendees, highlighting the latest developments and technical applications in this field.

Key Points of the Presentation:

The lecture was divided into three main sections, covering important aspects of optical fiber indoor installations:

1.Description of the Smart Readiness Program: The first section provided a detailed presentation of the Smart Readiness Program, emphasizing its importance in upgrading the “smart readiness” of existing building stock in Greece through the development of modern digital infrastructures. The program’s key aspects were discussed (eligibility criteria, program duration, covered works, any exceptions, etc.). The conditions for registering an installer in the program’s registry were outlined, along with ways smart infrastructures can improve energy efficiency, better interact with networks, and offer increased comfort and automation to end users.

2.Analysis of Internal Electronic Communications Network Architectures: The second section focused on the various architectures applied in optical fiber and electronic communication indoor installations. Technical specifications were analyzed, along with the challenges of designing networks for apartment buildings and office complexes, and the solutions that comply with international standards and E.D.H.E. regulations. The importance of proper design for optimal performance and long-term network functionality was highlighted.

3.Workshop: Optical Fiber Termination using Fusion Splice: In the third and practical section, participants had the opportunity to attend a hands-on workshop. The workshop focused on optical fiber termination using the fusion splice method. During the workshop, participants became familiar with the use of specialized tools and equipment, such as a fusion splicer and a fiber stripper. They learned the steps required for the proper preparation of optical fibers, splicing, and assessing the quality of the connection, gaining valuable practical skills essential for the successful installation of optical networks. After completing the optical fiber terminations using the splice-on-pigtail technique, attendees were shown how to perform optical power loss testing using a light source and an optical power meter. Furthermore, the properties of light were analyzed, helping participants better understand its behavior during transmission through optical fibers, thus enhancing their knowledge in the installation and maintenance of indoor optical networks.

The lecture was introduced by Mr. Alexios Pavlopoulos, with two specialized speakers presenting the topics. In the first section, Mr. Panagiotis Gkoumas, an optical fiber trainer and representative of the School of Telecoms, presented the Smart Readiness program. In the second section, Mr. Giorgos Moschonas, president of the Greek Optical Fiber Association, analyzed the architectures of internal electronic communication networks. The workshop was conducted jointly, where both speakers guided participants through the optical fiber termination process using the fusion splice method. Both speakers underscored the importance of optical fibers for the development of telecommunications infrastructure in Greece and the future opportunities in this field.

The participation of the School of Telecoms in the Energia-Tec 2024 conference was an excellent opportunity for the exchange of knowledge and ideas in the field of optical fibers and electronic communications. Through the lecture and workshop, participants had the chance to learn about the latest developments and technologies that promote sustainable growth and the digital upgrade of infrastructure in Greece. The active participation and collaboration of experts enhanced the value of the event, reaffirming the School of Telecoms’ commitment to promoting education and innovation in telecommunications. We look forward to future initiatives that will continue to advance expertise and collaboration among industry professionals.
